If you are running a web hosting business, you will from time to time receive support requests from clients asking you to generate SSL Certificate Signing Requests (CSR) for them. But how do you do that? Well, that's the purpose of this article. This article will show you how to generate CSR via the Web Host Manager (WHM) interface in 4 easy steps.
If you need to rather know how to generate the CSR from within cPanel, read our detailed guide on how to generate s certificate signing request in cPanel here. Also, this article focuses on WHM. If you want to know how to achieve the same within other web hosting control panels, please refer to our articles specific to those panels. Otherwise, let's get to the work.
- Log in to WHM. Being a hosting provider, you must already know how to access your WHM. So just go ahead and log in.
- Within your WHM interface, to the SSL/TLS section on the left navigation pane. Alternatively, use the search area at the top and type in SSL or generate, just to narrow down the menu. Then click Generate an SSL Certificate and Signing Request.
- On the resulting page, fill in the required information and click Create. Done.
The CSR, private key and a self-signed certificate will be displayed on the screen. If you selected the When complete, email me the certificate, key, and CSR checkbox, these will also be sent to your email address.
Congratulations! You just successfully generated an SSL Certificate Signing Request for your client via the WHM interface. You can now go ahead and share it with your client so that they are able to configure their SSL certificate. This CSR will be required by the Certificate Authority (CA) to facilitate the issuance of the SSL Certificate. You may also want to read about how to generate the CSR via the cPanel interface here.
